Q: I’m thinking of purchasing this vintage sewing stool for my first class project, but now I’m second guessing it. The lower part of the stool is hard for me to picture how I would be able to replace the vinyl with fabric. Is this too advanced of a choice for a beginner?
A: Thank you so much for taking the time to ask this question! This little sewing stool is actually a pretty simple project. Perfect for first timers, but don’t let the complexity of something stop you from getting started! If you’ve never done upholstery before, none of this is going to make sense to you. My best advice? Start by taking lots of pictures and video from every angle. Document every layer and step along the way in the same manner.
I taught myself upholstery through reverse engineering. Documenting my steps, and tracking them in reverse order, using my pictures and video for reference. When you’re here in class, this is exactly the approach we take. I’ll slow you down. I will walk you through every step. I’ll explain the how and why’s. You can take that knowledge with you to the next project. With practice, everything becomes easy.
